How to Adjust Your Sleep Schedule with Daylight Savings

Daylight Savings Time has its advantages. The mornings will be a little lighter than they’ve currently been, allowing for an easier morning commute. The darkness at night comes faster, though, making it difficult to want to stay awake when it’s already so dark outside. This one-hour change can make a big difference to your sleep schedule. You need to prepare your body for the transition and ensure your sleep won’t suffer when the hour falls back. 

Avoid Too Much Caffeine

Caffeine is one of the biggest problems when it comes to sleep. Drink too much, and you’re less likely to be able to drift off when you need to. Before Daylight Savings Time comes into play, you should start working on reducing your daily caffeine intake and becoming less reliant on the extra boost it gives you. Most people need to stop drinking their favorite coffee or energy drinks at least 4 hours before bedtime in order to fall asleep without struggling.

Avoid Alcohol

The same goes for alcohol. You should not consume adult beverages before bed, as they’re more likely to raise your body temperature. Even one drink can leave you tossing and turning throughout the night. Consume more than that, and you may really find yourself having a hard time trying to get any rest. 

Take a 20-Minute Nap

When you’re feeling tired and need a little rest to help you reset, 20 minutes is all it takes. Nap for longer than that and you’re more likely to wake up feeling groggy and unsatisfied from sleep. A 20-minute nap is all your mind often needs to shut down for a spell so you can wake up feeling recharged and ready to go. 

Maintain Your Sleep Routine

If you already have a routine in place, you need to maintain it. When the clock falls back an hour, don’t allow that to let you stay up for more time than you should. If you’re currently falling asleep at 10 pm, for example, then that time changes to 9 pm when the clock gets reset. It’s still essentially the same time, it just looks different due to the change to the clock.
