Mattress Housekeeping 101

You just bought a new mattress. You’re sinking into its cozy confines nightly and are sleeping better than you ever have before.  But did you know that you need to care for your mattress on a regular basis to ensure it remains like new for as long as possible? Here are 4 tips for caring for your new mattress.

Rotate Your Mattress Monthly

Rotating your mattress monthly can even out normal wear over time and lengthen the lifespan of your mattress. Once a month rotate your mattress so the head of the mattress becomes the foot of the mattress. By regularly rotating your mattress you don’t have to worry about wearing in certain spots of the mattress.

Clean Your Mattress Regularly

Cleaning your mattress regularly removes dust and allergens from it and lengthens the life of your mattress. Vacuum your mattress often, at least every six months. You should especially pay attention to the seams and crevices where dust, hair, and skin particles tend to accumulate. Many have also started utilizing the popular “old wives’ tale” of sprinkling baking soda on their mattress, however, we don’t recommend this. Your mattress naturally expands and contracts, but baking soda interrupts this process, causing it to sag.

Purchase A Mattress Protector

Don’t underestimate the value of a mattress protector. Mattress protectors ensure that spills, dirt, dust, and other debris don’t make it onto the mattress itself. Mattress protectors are easy to clean too. Just pop them in the washing machine!

Wash Linens Regularly

When you sleep not only do you sweat, but you shed skin and body oils on your linens. Wash bedsheets and blankets every one to two weeks to keep your mattress clean and fresh. Even if you use a mattress protector, you should wash your linens regularly.

Get the most out of your new mattress by regularly cleaning and rotating it to keep it like new for longer. For more mattress care tips or to purchase a mattress check out BR Mattress. Contact us today!
